How to Make Your Music Community Pay Off

Dear Rally Attendees and Members-At-Large,

Wow!!!!! Now THAT was a Road Rally!

The feedback we've had so far is that this Rally was better than any previous Rally. And that's exactly what we set out to do each year — make it better than the last.

An observation: It's not like we've got a patent on conventions for songwriters and musicians. I certainly didn't come up with the concept. Organizations like the LASS had put them on long before TAXI existed.

Is Imitation the Most Sincere Form of Flattery?

Since we started the TAXI Road Rally 14 years ago, others have tried to copy it. If we roll out One-to-One Mentors, they roll it out the next year. If we roll out Mentor Lunches, they roll it out too. If we add a panel on Music for Advertising, so will they. I guess we should be flattered that they try to imitate what we do.

But there's something special that happens every year at the Rally that nobody has been able to copy — the spirit, heart and generosity of the people who come from 31 countries all over the world to be part of the Road Rally community. You guys amaze my staff and me!

The Rally imitators will likely read this and start sending out marketing pieces talking about "their communities," but ours is organic and I don't believe that you can manufacture another in its image. It either happens or it doesn't.

I opened this year's Rally by talking about legendary producer Michael Lloyd's generosity, and that word kept popping up all weekend long. So many relationships have started at the Rally, and because of one member's generosity toward another, collaborations and deals keep happening as a result.

450 + Placements in Just Two Months!

One such community relationship has resulted in a windfall for one of our members, and the news hit my desk right after this year's Rally. TAXI member Lydia Ashton had been connected by fellow member Allen DeSomer, to a publisher who comes to the Rally every year and uses TAXI as his exclusive resource for composers.

That one connection has resulted in Lydia and her writing partner landing the Theme for a very popular daytime TV talk show (we're not allowed to use the show or company name without clearing it first).

I called Lydia to congratulate her yesterday and found out that she and her writing partner have had 450+ placements on that show over the last two months. Actually, the placements have been in the last FIVE weeks!

Quoting from an email Lydia sent me today:
"I will send in an official 'success story email' in the next couple of days. :) I just caught up on the episodes I had missed while at the Rally yesterday and am now at 450+ placements over the last two months. Amazing! :) "

Another TV Theme Landed!

Another TAXI member, Barry French (Big Blue Barry), stopped me as I was leaving the Rally on Sunday night and told me that he had "unofficial" word that a track of his was being picked up as the Theme on another show that's about to launch on a new cable network that's almost sure to be a huge hit. I've since confirmed the deal with the publisher Barry met through other members at the Rally last year.

There's that community and its generosity thing again!

$200,000 a Year Making Music at Home...

And, as I think you'll remember, I got yet another call from long time TAXI member Chuck Henry, right before the Rally, telling me that he's now making $200,000 a year because of TAXI relationships and/or music he has created for TAXI listings.

So what's the difference between these members and those who grouse about not getting deals through TAXI? They're ALL using the same company — us — so what are the variables?

The music would certainly be first on that list, but there's something more to it. All of the folks I've mentioned in this email are hard working, wonderfully nice people. ALL of them!

And the other things they have in common are taking TAXI's feedback to heart, being involved in our online Forum (community), and coming to the Road Rally to be part of that spirit of generosity I mentioned earlier.

So, to each and every one of you who were part of last week's love fest at the Rally, and to those of you who are part of our online Forum community, THANK you for "getting" it! You're doing exactly what these successful TAXI members have done, and dramatically increasing your odds of success by doing it.

I sincerely hope that if you're reading this and you're not taking advantage of these FREE benefits that come with your membership, that after reading this you will.
